This an Egyptian Revival winged scarab pin made of 18 karat yellow gold circa 1920. The scarab is black steatite, a form of alabaster that was commonly used by the ancient Egyptians. The pin measures 2 1/16 inches (54mm) wide by 3/4 inches (18.5mm) high and has a safety stick pin with a chain.
The scarab was loose when we bought this from the estate department so I made an impression of it's back before reseating it. Scarab jewelry became the vogue after the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922.
An Egyptologist Translated the scarab which reads Speaker Of Truth and is from Tuthmosis III, King Tut's Grandfather and dates to the 18th Dynasty, 1479-1425 BCE.
